In 1784, Swedes landed on a small, warm Caribbean island: the antithesis of their cold home country in Northern Europe. This month, Sweden will commemorate the history of their former colony, St. Barth. The Colony Project, a collaborative program headed by Fredrik Helander and Fredrik Pettersson, aims to revive and retell the story of St. Barth, and to create a historical spring board for confronting contemporary issues of multiculturalism and identity.
To promote awareness of Sweden’s 96 year presence on the island, a replica of a historical house on St. Barth has been constructed on a small, man-made island next to the Skansen museum in central Stockholm. Complete with traditional furnishings, this edifice tells a story through environmental immersion, brought to life by an actress playing the role of the house’s host. The interactive program extends beyond the Gustavian house as well, with debates, discussions, art and workshops throughout Stockholm. (more…)

The work of photographer Roe Etheridge will be exhibited at Me.di.um gallery for the week of July 23 to July 30, 2007. A majority of the photographs shown were taken during Etheridge’s residency on the island. His work presents a view of St. Barths that contradicts the idyllic images of sunsets, coast lines and gorgeous celebrities for which the island is famous. Photographs of a graveyard or a local firefighter are pieces of a very different island narrative, one where the imperfection and realities of daily life are brought to the forefront. (more…)

On his 29-day residency on the island away from Carter kept a blog about his thoughts and experiences on St. Barths.
