St. Jean Beach Erosion

The sands at St Jean beach have been noticeably disappearing as erosion worsens each year, and a replenishment project may be in sight. Likely weakened by disease and human activity, Hurricane Luis served a fatal blow to the living coral reef which served to protect St Jean bay. Without the strength of this natural barrier, the beach has seen higher wave action than it did before the 1995 storm and he waves shift and push the sand around with much greater frequency and force. As a result, there currently not enough sand to make the walk all the way across the beach without trekking through a bit of shallow ocean, prompting island residents to worry about the fate of their highly developed and popular bay. DigiCel Offers New Promotion to Cellular Customers

Digicel, the Caribbean’s fastest growing telecommunications company and largest GSM operator in the region plans to offer an exciting new promotion in which customers can enjoy free weekend minutes. Digi to Digi calls up to one hour are free for postpaid customers and calls more than two minutes by prepaid customers will receive the entire hour free. Launched in 2001, DigiCel has become one of the most successful operators in 22 Caribbean islands, including coverage in St. Barth, while recently expanding its market to Central America. The promotion will run from September 14th until October 31st. According to general manager Roy Gillingham, the promotion is a way in which the company can thank customers for their loyalty.

Although its the low season here, a few visitors are continuing to pull their yachts into the harbors of St. Barth. Most notably was the 93 ft. Brazilian-built aft house explorer, Impetus. Built by Inace, the giant beauty was hard to miss in the port of Gustavia yesterday.

Michel Malochet is the creator of a travel video “De Saint Martin a Saint Barth…” documenting his first hand experiences on these islands. We had the opportunity to interview Malochet, where he expressed his lifelong passion for photography and his experiences on St. Barth during the creation of his video.

“I have been keen on photography during all my life”, Malochet began. He embarked on his exploration of capturing the world around him by creating slideshows with musical accompaniment to share photography with friends and family. In 2004, Malochet expanded his passion to a larger audience by launching the website MM Video. With the advent of the digital age, he began to experiment with cinematography, creating a film in Morocco that was edited on DVD. Since then, MM Video has been the home for all of Malochet’s travel sourvenirs: photos, videos, screensavers and travel notes available in French and English. Read more »
